SCIENCE OF SUMMER 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Ages 9-13
Summer is filled with fun activities and new experiences that make it so enjoyable. Hidden behind all of those activities lurks science just waiting to be discovered. In this class, students will explore the science involved in some of their favorite summer activities. Each day will focus on a different field of science and how it can be experienced in the world around us. Hands on activities will allow students to explore and make discoveries of their own. $150
Dan Brabec teaches science and math at Steamboat Springs Middle School and is an avid outdoor enthusiast.
ROBOTICS AND CREATIVE CODING Session 1: 9:00 – 12:00 / Session 2: 12:30 – 3:30 Ages 9 and up
Robotics - experience building and programming a LEGO EV3 robot to accomplish tasks using color, sound, touch, and ultrasonic sensors. Explore basic programming maneuvers then advance to solving challenges and accomplishing missions.
Creative Coding - writing code is an art form. Much like a poet writing a poem or an author writing a story, programmers create through lines in a computer language. Learn to code video games using Scratch and create digital artwork with Python. $150
Diane Maltby the STEM teacher at SSMS coaches award-winning competitive robotics teams.

Prerequisite skills: they’ll need to know how to add/subtract/multiply/divide, and be ready to work hard for 2.5 hours each morning (though we always have lots of fun too!). $125

INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE WRITING Middle School 9:00 - 10:30 High School 12:30 - 2:00
Putting pen to page whether it is in the form of poetry, prose, or journalism is an excellent way of exercising the imagination. Each day, a new genre will be introduced including poetry, fiction, science fiction/fantasy, nonfiction, prose, and journalism. Students will examine different works, analyze them, and then apply what they have learned writing a short piece of their own for each genre. $75
Emily Berarducci teaches French at SSMS and also has a background in archaeology and creative writing. She is an avid reader and writer and is in the process of revising her own novel with plans of publication in the near future.
CREATIVE WRITER'S WORKSHOP Middle School 10:30 - 12:00 High School 2:30 - 3:30
This program includes a blend of group writing sessions and revision workshops where students will learn to use group feedback to make meaningful revisions to their writing. It’s targeted towards students who have already dabbled in writing and would like to look at the critiquing and revision process of writing (getting that first draft to a more refined product). Students are requested, but not required to have a piece of writing that they are already working on. $75
